"Don't be afraid to make a dance, throw it away, and make a different one." This is something I tell my high school dance students all the time. Surely I should have been prepared to apply this thinking to my parenting...
If you haven't already, you're going to have to develop a new way of thinking. Think of yourself like an inventor, a scientist, an artist...
Parenting is all trial and error. My mom and mother-in-law kept saying this over and over but I couldn't hear it. The first couple of months were extremely hard for me and much of that could be contributed to my fear of trying different things until I found something that worked. I felt like this little person should be easy to control because my decisions for her were sensible. But that's really not how it goes. You don't know this person. It takes time like any relationship. It takes a bunch of time. For me, about 5 months before I really could stand up proud and tall, beat my chest, and declare "I AM MOTHER, HEAR ME ROAR!" And then I felt good. I felt like I could make decisions, multiple decisions, and make mistakes that wouldn't make anyone crumble. So try some stuff out and always make sure you can return it for a full refund. (Sorry, babies not included)
